One Health Approach Course: Host-Fungus Interactions and Virulence
Description
The course aims to equip participants with skills and knowledge that enable them to complement their academic background and/or better adapt to specific demands of the job market.
Some relevant learning outcomes are listed below:
- Identify the most relevant fungal pathogens in different types of infections, their geographical distribution, and impact on human health;
- Describe the importance of timely and accurate diagnosis in the treatment and prevention of these infections;
- Explain how different virulence factors can influence the susceptibility and severity of fungal infections;
- Use experimental methods to assess the fungus-host interaction;
- Understand the impact of environmental factors such as habitat destruction, climate change, and pollution on the emergence and spread of fungal infections;
- Explore Next-Generation Sequencing techniques in identifying genetic alterations and genetic diversity of fungi due to environmental changes;
- Explore omics approaches like transcriptomics and metabolomics in studying the fungus-host interaction;
- Provide examples of changes in fungal virulence due to climate changes;
- Apply the knowledge and methodologies covered in developing a research project within the scope of the course;
- Demonstrate organizational and planning skills in presenting and discussing case studies on examples of emerging fungal infections due to natural and anthropogenic environmental disturbances in public forums.
